Project Description

This project will re-route a section of McNeil Canyon Rd north of its existing alignment. The new segment will create a much safer road with appropriate sight distance, the elimination of a dangerous curves, and a reduced grade to 9.4%. Douglas County proposes the placement of 8-inches of crushed surfacing base course, 4-inches of crushed surfacing top course, and 3-inches of hot mix asphalt with a surface width of 30-feet. The new roadway will consist of 11-foot travel lanes with 4-foot shoulders, along with additional lane widening through the 2,000-foot horizontal curves. Vertical and horizontal alignment will be resolved at substandard locations bringing them up to compliance with AASHTO standards for a 50 mph paved, rural roadway. Guardrail to be installed where appropriate.

Phase & Schedule

This project is currently in the Design Phase and scheduled for construction in 2025. 

1. Preliminary Engineering: Preliminary Engineering to be complete at the end of February 2025.

2. Right-of-Way Acquisition: Anticipated for completion April 2025.

3. Construction: Anticipated to begin in early April of 2025. 


Project Funding

This project is funded through the County Road Administration Board's (CRAB) Rural Arterial Program (RAP). The initial RATA funding was approved in 2022 in the amount of $2,653,200.

Project Updates

10/01/2025 - Construction activity progress and updates associated with McNeil Canyon Road Realignment project for the week of October 1st through October 10th area as follows:

  • Final grading of crushed surfacing.
  • Final installation of drainage rock.
  • Installation of erosion control measures.
  • Paving to begin Monday October 6, 2025.

Traffic impacts:

  • Speed limits throughout the work zone will be reduced to 25 MPH.
  • Flagger controlled alternating one-way traffic patterns through the work zone will be in effect during working hours of 7:00 am -4:30 pm Monday through Friday.

FAQ's

  1. Will local residents have access to McNeil Canyon Hill during the project?
    1. The road will remain open to traffic during construction. However, expect delays on McNeil Canyon Road as the road will reduce to one way.
  2. When should we expect construction to be completed?
    1. We anticipate for construction to be complete November of 2025.
  3. Will there be any impacts to private roads such as Ridge Road?
    1. Ridge Road will remain open during construction; the entrance and first 80 ft. will be regraded and repaved. 
  4. At what hours of the day will there be closures and restrictions?
    1. The road will remain open but you can expect delays as the road will reduce to alternating one-way traffic.
