McGinnis Canyon Road Project

McGinnis Canyon Road, from milepost 19.08 to 21.47 (subject to final design), currently is a substandard hardened surface (dirt and decomposed rock) county road positioned between two sections of asphalt roadway, Badger Mtn Rd and Baseline Rd.  Although the road has a dirt surface it is designated as a major collector and connects two urban centers.  This section of road is characterized by steep grades (up to 15%) and awkward horizontal and vertical alignment conditions that result in site distance and design speed deficiencies.  The lack of adequate base and surfacing results in poor driving conditions and regular required maintenance.  To optimize safety conditions, minimize regular required maintanance, and improve overall driving conditions along the corridor, the county is currently designing the reconstruction of this section of roadway with the following improvements:

  1. Widen the existing roadway from the existing 24’ to 30’
  2. Remediate existing roadway and driveway intersection deficiencies.
  3. Replace the existing surfacing with an asphalt roadway section.
  4. Install guardrail at required locations.
  5. Install stormwater management facilities to improve drainage and protect the roadway.
  6. Flatten roadway side slopes where applicable and feasible.
  7. Adjust horizontal and vertical  alignments to improve sight distances.
  8. Remove and relocate roadside hazards.
  9. Reduce the tree canopy through the road corridor to help minimize ice buildup in the winter.
