Building Construction and Land Use Permits

These responsibilities include building permit processing and inspection; land use permitting including divisions of land, conditional uses, variances, shoreline permits and environmental review; and code compliance. Douglas County, like all local jurisdictions, requires permits for construction and land use activities. In addition, Douglas County is responsible for the supervision of the division of lots consistent with state and local codes. Transportation and Land Services has been structured to provide a "one stop" approach to obtaining all your local construction and land use permits.

Certain permits are required prior to beginning construction, alteration, and/or demolition of all structures in Douglas County. The State of Washington requires all cities and counties to enforce an assortment of construction-related codes, all of which are intended to establish a minimum standard of safety, health, efficiency and accessibility throughout the state. Douglas County has only limited authority to modify the requirements of the state. Mandated regulations include building, fire, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical codes, as well as energy, ventilation, and barrier-free codes. Check with us before beginning a project to determine what, if any, permits you might need.

Office hours are from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM Mondays through Fridays, excluding holiday observances. If you have any questions, call us or stop in. We have building code reference material and several examples on how to prepare plans.

Various departments will inspect your project periodically during construction. The applicant and/or contractor are responsible for arranging the required inspections. Residential and commercial construction require a final inspection after construction is complete and before the building is occupied.  On Fridays, building inspections will be limited to the Greater East Wenatchee area, Orondo, Badger Mountain, everything directly west and southwest of the Town of Waterville, and the unincorporated area around the City of Rock Island.  Please see the Friday Inspection Area.
